Aston Villa have been linked with a permanent move for the Manchester United loanee.

According to a report from the Telegraph, Aston Villa manager Steve Bruce wants to seal a £3million permanent deal for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone.

The 24-year-old is currently on loan at Villa Park and after a shaky start he has impressed, keeping four clean sheets in his last five appearances.

Given the presence of David de Gea and Sergio Romero at Old Trafford, it is almost impossible for Johnstone to stake a claim at United right now, but it remains to be seen if Jose Mourinho would sanction a sale.

One thing is for sure, Villa want to get their man and for £3million they would be getting a ‘keeper who is only going to get better in the next few years.

United have a history of selling bright prospects for far less than they are worth – Michael Keane as a case in point – so if Villa can get Johnstone for £3million, his value is only going to go one way over the next five years.

He is a Premier League quality goalkeeper who is well worth the outlay, but Mourinho knows he can only keep a third-choice happy for so long, and a sale could be in the best interests of all concerned.

In today’s inflated market, Villa could snag a bargain and Johnstone could finally find a home where he can stake a long-term claim for regular first-team football.
