At a time when Aston Villa are cutting costs, offering Chelsea’s John Terry £60,000-a-week seems like madness.

John Terry is currently considering an offer to join Aston Villa that will see the former Chelsea captain earn £60,000-a-week.

That is according to the Sun, who also say that Terry will earn a further £2m in bonuses should Villa get promoted from the Championship in 2017/18.

So that is a £3m basic wage, which could potentially rise to £5m, being offered to a 36-year-old defender by a club trying to reduce their costs.

As the Telegraph reported back in May, the Villans have frozen transfer funds for manager Steve Bruce because they are dangerously close to breaching Financial Fair Play rules after a bumper year of spending.

FFP restrictions state a club must not lose more than £83m over three seasons, with Villa teetering on the edge currently at £81.3m worth of losses.

It is at moments like this where experienced bosses such as Bruce really should show their worth, using contacts and expertise to bring in talent as shrewdly as possible.

Sanctioning huge wages for a centre-back who barely played last term and looked horribly off the pace when he did does not fall into that bracket.
