Unai Emery wants Pako Ayestaran at Aston Villa and has offered the Spaniard a role as his assistant manager.

Emery was happy and settled in Spain this time last week.

Then Aston Villa sacked Steven Gerrard and turned to Villarreal boss Emery as his replacement.

By Monday night, Emery was back in the Premier League almost three years since being sacked by Arsenal.

Emery will want to prove a few doubters wrong as he returns to English football and he has his first move in mind.

Unai Emery wants Pako Ayestaran

The Daily Mail report that Emery has offered Pako Ayestaran the chance to join him at Villa Park.

Juan Carlos Carcedo was Emery’s first team assistant head coach at Arsenal but he is now in charge of Real Zaragoza.

That means Emery must now find another assistant and he wants Ayestaran to be his number two at Aston Villa.

The 59-year-old has a long coaching history behind him, mostly with Rafael Benitez.

The pair worked together at Osasuna, Extremadura, Tenerife, Valencia and Liverpool before going their separate ways in 2007.

Ayestaran has pursued a managerial carer of his own, taking charge of Tecos, Maccabi Tel Aviv, Santos Laguna, Las Palmas, Pachuca and Tondela.

There was also a stint as Gary Neville’s assistant at Valencia before replacing the Sky Sports pundit in the dugout.

Now available again, Ayestaran could return to the Premier League to work alongside compatriot Emery.

It’s a strange twist of fate really as Ayestaran coached Steven Gerrard at Liverpool and could now assist the man who replaces him.

Ayestaran actually backed Gerrard for a big managerial career in 2018, believing he had all the qualities and attributes to become a top boss.

That prediction took a hit with the Villa sacking and Ayestaran could now end up in the very same dugout Gerrard has left.
