The Villa ace, who’s been called up to the England squad, shared some of Villans assistant manager John Terry’s coaching methods.
Aston Villa defender Tyrone Mings has spoken highly of Villa Park assistant manager John Terry, giving an insight into the Chelsea and England legend’s coaching methods, in conversation with Sky Sports News.
The 26-year-old has been working with Terry since January, when he moved to Villa Park on loan from Bournemouth, and since then the centre-back’s career has come in leaps and bounds.
In the space of just nine months, Mings has gone from being surplus to requirements at Bournemouth to being established member of Villa’s side, with a promotion under his belt and a spot in the England squad.
Mings’ loan spell with Villa was made permanent in the summer and the 6ft 5in ace feels that Terry has been a key influence on him, saying “he has developed my game for sure”, before divulging the finer details of his coaching methods and saying where he feels he could improve even more.
“He tries to tell me to go through a game without being seen or without being mentioned,” Mings told Sky Sports News. “He says that is a good reflection of a centre-back’s performance – if they come off the pitch and nobody really knows what they’ve done and they’ve quietly gone about their business. So that is something I am trying to do more.
“After a game we’ll watch clips of my game back and he’ll then tell me what he likes and what he doesn’t like. He’s worked under such great managers and he’s obviously got all the experience that I would love to have, so things that he tells me really stick and we then try to implement that on the training pitch and work through different things. He gives me a little bit of criticism but at the moment it’s a lot of positivity.”
Mings has been called up to the England squad for the first time by Gareth Southgate ahead of the Euro 2020 qualifying double header against Bulgaria and Kosovo at Wembley.
