Aston Villa’s official Twitter account has responded to a trolling tweet from Virgin Trains that mocked the club’s dire position in the Championship.

Aston Villa fired Roberto di Matteo on Monday after the club scraped one win in 11 Championship games, leaving them 19th in the league.

Having recently been relegated from the Premier League last season, Di Matteo is the fourth manager to be sacked in the past 18 months, following Paul Lambert, Tim Sherwood and Remi Garde.

Their continued misfortune on and off the pitch has seen them become the target of mockery across the board, most recently from Virgin Trains who took a swipe at the club on Twitter…

Aston Villa have now responded with a dig of their own as the exchange continued this afternoon.

But the tweet has backfired on the club as fans have trolled the account for their sub-par response, a testament to how frustrated followers are when they are choosing a train company over their own club.

Virgin Trains have now responded with yet another dig at Aston Villa by boasting that they’ve had more trains on time in a week than Aston Villa have had wins in 12 months, a feat customers are not impressed with given that it only amounts to five.

The social media team at Aston Villa clearly have plenty of time on their hands as they are determined to have the last word…

How long this exchange will continue remains to be seen but this latest PR embarrassment is the last thing the club needs as they try and get their season back on track.
