French outlet Jeunes Footeux report that Aston Villa midfielder Morgan Sanson will complete a medical at Ligue 1 side Strasbourg in the ‘next few hours’. A deal is in place for Sanson to return to France and to Strasbourg initially on loan.
Sanson, 28, joined Aston Villa from Marseille in January 2021 for a fee of £16million. It came after clocking up a huge 157 appearances for Marseille, having a hand in 47 goals from midfield. But he has failed to recreate that form at Villa.
Indeed, Sanson – once touted with a senior France cap – has managed just 23 appearances for Villa in two years. Since Unai Emery’s arrival at Villa, he has managed two late outings off the bench in the Premier League. He needs a move.
The issue, though, is that Sanson signed a deal until June 2025 and Villa will fail to get anything near the £16million they paid for him. So, Sanson will only realistically be able to go on loan. Strasbourg are willing to take that chance.

Sanson joins a Strasbourg side flirting dangerously close to relegation. This season, four teams will go down in Ligue 1. Strasbourg currently sit in 16th place – one place above the four going down. In fact, they are level on points with 17th.
Villa have a number of midfielders stopping Sanson from making his mark. Jacob Ramsey, Emi Buendia, John McGinn and Philippe Coutinho are all ahead of Sanson in the pecking order. So, it is a no-brainer for Sanson to leave the club.
Even if it is on loan. He will start for Strasbourg and play the majority of their remaining games. Whether he can shine, and show French football clubs that he still has the quality he showed at Marseille to earn a future move, who knows.
