Tottenham Hotspur may have to thank Premier League rivals Aston Villa should they manage to sell Victor Wanyama.
While Tottenham can no longer make any signings, it appears that it could still be a busy end to the month for Daniel Levy, with The Telegraph reporting that Spurs are in talks with Club Brugge regarding the potential sale of Victor Wanyama.
Wanyama has fallen out of favour having struggled with injury for much of the last two years. The Kenya international managed to make just 13 Premier League appearances last season, and appears to find himself well down the pecking order.
The Telegraph reports that Spurs are in discussions with the Belgian club about a potential £11 million deal for the former Southampton man – the fee would see Tottenham recoup what they initially paid for the 28-year-old three years ago.
And should they manage to get an eight-figure fee for Wanyama, it would appear that Spurs may have Aston Villa to partially thank given the business that Dean Smith’s men did with Brugge while the English window was open.
The Telegraph reports that Brugge made £33 million selling Wesley and Marvelous Nakamba to the Villans ahead of their return to the top flight – and Nakamba’s departure in particular appears to have sparked their interest in Wanyama.
While Wanyama has the potential to be worth a lot more money, it would still be a positive if they secure a decent fee for a player who looks set to endure a frustrating season if he remains at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium beyond the deadline.
It would also be a positive if they are able to offload Wanyama to a club from another country. They could come up against the midfielder if Club Brugge manage to reach the Champions League group-stages and the two clubs are drawn together, but he would surely have the potential to do a lot more damage to Spurs if he joined another Premier League side.
And it appears that the chances of Spurs actually offloading Wanyama have inadvertently increased thanks to Villa’s very productive summer.
