Steven Gerrard wanted to bring Keinan Davis to Rangers – and now finally works with him in his new job at Aston Villa.
The Athletic report that Gerrard is a big fan of Davis and actually wanted to bring him to Ibrox during his time as Rangers boss.
In November, Gerrard finally got the chance to work with Davis having quit Rangers to take the Aston Villa job.
That’s a major vote of confidence for Davis, who has yet to really nail down a regular starting role at Villa Park.
Having a manager who believes in him so much and even wanted to sign him suggests that Davis could have a bright future ahead.
Unfortunately for Davis, he still faces an uphill battle in pursuit of first-team football at Villa Park.
Gerrard already has two proven Premier League strikers at his disposal in Ollie Watkins and Danny Ings.
Considerable money has been spent on both players, and Gerrard will need to get the best out of them at Villa Park.
Davis has yet to really show that he should play ahead of either Watkins or Ings.
In 87 games across all competitions for Villa, Davis has managed just seven goals.
You have to factor in that many of those appearances were as a substitute, but Davis has lacked a clinical edge.
Physical, hard-working and possessing a decent turn of pace, Davis has the raw abilities to cause real problems for defenders.
Davis turns 24 in February though, meaning he needs to be playing regularly now.
If it doesn’t happen for Davis under Gerrard, it may never happen for him at Villa considering that Rangers history.
