Aston Villa have sprung a major surprise this evening by confirming the unexpected signing of defender Calum Chambers from Arsenal.

Villa do love a completely out of the blue signing; just remember the deal to sign Danny Ings from Southampton last summer.

Tonight it’s Chambers heading to Villa, signing a three-and-a-half-year deal with Steven Gerrard’s men.

Chambers can now settle at Villa until 2025, having endured something of a difficult time with Arsenal.

Signed for £16million from Southampton in 2014, Chambers was expected to become a star in North London.

Chambers only managed 74 Premier League appearances for Arsenal and spent time out on loan at Middlesbrough and Fulham.

Now 27, Chambers needs to be playing first-team football and that just isn’t going to come under Mikel Arteta at Arsenal.

A versatile performer who can play at centre back, right back or even in holding midfield, Chambers offers a great option for Gerrard.

Whether it’s as competition for Matty Cash at right back or challenging Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings at centre back, Chambers makes sense for Villa.

The Telegraph’s Sam Dean adds that there is no transfer fee involved, making this deal even better for Villa.

Chambers has now commented on the move, telling Villa’s official website that he thinks Villa are a ‘massive club’.

Chambers noted that Villa Park is a great stadium, and heaped praise on boss Gerrard, believing he is ‘young and exciting’.

The former Arsenal man added that he was impressed with Gerrard’s work at Rangers and now can’t wait to work with him at Villa.

Chambers even claims he has already noticed the great energy around Villa, seemingly believing that the club are going places.

“It’s a great club, it’s a massive club. I’ve played at Villa Park a few times and it’s great stadium with a great set of fans,” said Chambers. “The manager did very well at Rangers. He’s a young, exciting manager and I can’t wait to work with him.”

“It’s a great stage to be joining the club at. The club’s building momentum and it’s an exciting time to be here. You can really feel that being in and around the building. You can feel the energy around the place. I feel like I’ve joined at a great time and I can’t wait to get started and give it my all,” he added.
