Aston Villa starlet Andre Green has heaped praised on new captain Tommy Elphick, in an interview with the club’s official website.

The central defender joined from Bournemouth in June and has quickly established himself as a leader at Villa Park, and Green is grateful to call him a team-mate.

“I have got to mention Tommy – he’s had a big effect on the group,” said the youngster.

“He’s a leader. He helps everyone. He cares about everyone in the dressing room. He genuinely is a kind guy. He has everything you need to be captain. Every team needs a Tommy Elphick.

“I obviously knew about his personality from being around him at the training ground but when I saw him get clattered on the opening day and carry on, I thought ‘this guy is a real warrior out there’. He’s so brave,” he added.

Elphick has joined as part of the Tony Xia revolution and is now a crucial part of what looks to be a very stern defensive unit.

Alongside the 28-year old is James Chester, with Ritchie De Laet and Pierluigi Gollini providing further quality options at right-back and in goal, respectively.

Ahead of the back four, new signing Mile Jedinak is an experienced shield and will provide a solid foundation for the Villa attackers to work their magic.

The Villans have endured a difficult start to the season – with one win, two defeats and two draws from their first five fixtures – but they are slowly building a strong squad that, once settled, will be a match for anyone in the Championship.

Bristol City are up next up for Roberto Di Matteo’s side and he will be hoping to build on last weekend’s solid point against Derby County when the club’s meet at Ashton Gate on Saturday.
