Aston Villa fans will be hoping that their side have turned the corner after Saturday’s win.
Aston Villa’s James Chester in action
Aston Villa’s James Chester spoke to the club’s official website in the aftermath of his side’s hugely significant win over Derby County on Saturday, and explained that the clean sheet he helped his side earn meant more to him than the goal he scored that won the game for Steve Bruce’s team.
The Villans now sit eight points clear of 22nd placed Wigan Athletic, and can start to look ahead, rather than behind them.
They face hugely important games against Bristol City and Rotherham United respectively now, and will be looking for maximum points from those outings in an effort to keep whatever faint hopes they have of making the play-offs alive.
And Chester spoke to AVFC.co.uk about Villa’s huge win over the Rams, surprisingly suggesting that his side’s ability to keep a clean sheet meant more to him than his game-winning goal:
“It’s a strange one – it’s been a long time since I scored. It’s a really nice feeling, especially with the run we’ve been on it was important to get a result, so it was nice to help out. The clean sheet, I would say, is more pleasing than the goal, this season we haven’t kept anywhere near enough clean sheets, not enough that I’d like, anyway.”

Steve Bruce has endured heavy criticism over the past couple of months, as is too often the case in football when a team begins to struggle, but it has been the players who deserve the blame for the manner in which they have gone about their business recently.
They have, however, began to repay some of the faith shown in them by their manager with Saturday’s win against Derby.
The challenge for them now though, will be to embark on a sustained run of form, and start their long awaited climb up the table.
