Aston Villa left back Jordan Amavi has told France Football that he was not expecting manager Roberto Di Matteo to be sacked earlier this week.

Italian boss Di Matteo was only appointed as Villa boss over the summer, but he lasted just 124 days in the job before being sacked on Monday morning.

With just one win in his first 11 Championship games, Di Matteo lost his job after a 2-0 away defeat to Preston North End, and Villa are once again searching for a new manager.

Having gone through Paul Lambert, Tim Sherwood, Remi Garde and Di Matteo in recent years, there have been questions asked about whether Villa are giving enough time to their managers.

With that in mind, Villa left back Jordan Amavi has had his say on the matter, telling France Football that he was not expecting Di Matteo to lose his job even after such a disappointing start to the season.

Amavi, who joined Villa from Nice in 2015, stated that he understands how things go when teams don’t get results, and understands how the Villa board want results quickly as they look to move out of the bottom half of the Championship.

The Frenchman did also add that he actually thinks Di Matteo is a ‘very good coach’, and appreciated how he called him over the summer to tell him just how important he was to Villa.

“I was not expecting it at all,” said Amavi. “However, we know how it is when a team doesn’t produce results, the manager is targeted. I personally think he’s a very good coach. When I was on vacation, he called me to tell me he was counting on me, and he wanted me in the team. It’s a shame, that’s how it happens. The club doesn’t have the time, the board want results in order to climb back up the table,” he added.
