Rangers defender James Tavernier has been linked with a move away from Ibrox.
Rangers’ James Tavernier enjoyed a remarkable first campaign under Steven Gerrard, with his attacking output simply ridiculous even for an attack-minded full back.
The 27-year-old hit 17 goals and 20 assists from right back for Rangers this past season, again underlining why Gerrard holds him in such high esteem.
Tavernier has now hit 43 goals for Rangers since signing from Wigan Athletic in 2015, and it’s no surprise that he’s being targeted for a move away from Ibrox.
However, the Daily Mail’s report that Aston Villa want to bring Tavernier to Villa Park makes little sense, even if Tavernier maybe deserves a Premier League shot at some point soon.
The reason this move would be so bizarre? Well, Villa signed Caen right back Frederic Guilbert on deadline day in January, but sent him back on loan to Caen.
Villa were so convinced that Guilbert would be their right back of the future that they allowed him to remain in France until the end of the season, with the 24-year-old set to feature in pre-season under Dean Smith.
It would be absurd for Villa to splash the cash on another right back before giving Guilbert a real chance in the first team, and if they’re to bring in another option there, it should be one willing to backup Guilbert.
Signing Tavernier would leave two expensive right backs battling one for spot, and Villa would be better off using their funds in other positions as they prepare for their Premier League return.
