Villa are set to lose loanees Axel Tuanzebe and Tammy Abraham, Jack Grealish could go, veterans Mile Jedinak, Glenn Whelan, Tommy Elphick and Glenn Whelan are all out of contract whilst Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause and Tom Carroll are fighting for deals.
Villa may well see more than 10 players leave Dean Smith’s side this summer, and that means there will be a huge rebuild on the cards as Grealish is the only one expected to leave for big money.
Free agents would be ideal for Villa, and The Sun report that Villa hold an interest in snapping up Dutchman Mike van der Hoorn this summer.
It’s claimed that Villa wanted Swansea’s defender in January, but were quoted £10million for him – despite him being inside the last six months of his contract.
Now though, Villa can sign Van der Hoorn for free this summer, and fending off any late interest to land him for nothing would be the perfect start to the summer window.
The 26-year-old, formerly of Ajax, has emerged as a top Championship centre back this season, starring with Swansea not only as a solid defender with his power and aerial ability, but also his ability to play out from the back under Graham Potter.
Many managers want to build from the back, and with James Chester the only proven centre back contracted for next season, Van der Hoorn would give Smith a quality Championship centre back to build around.
Add in that he’s valued at £10million by Swansea, and securing him for free becomes a no-brainer for Villa, who face a huge summer transfer window as they look to rebuild under Smith.
