Newcastle United goalkeeper Martin Dubravka is reportedly attracting interest from Steve Bruce’s former club Aston Villa.

Martin Dubravka catches the ball during the Newcastle United Training Session at the Newcastle United Training Centre on July 11, 2019 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

In 2016, both Aston Villa and Newcastle United suffered relegation to the Championship. It only took the Magpies one season to make a return to the Premier League, whilst it took Villa three.

There’s no doubt that three years in the second tier resulted in Villa taking a lot of hits, but in the end, it was all beneficial because they came out the other side with their future looking brighter than ever. The same cannot be said of the North East club.

And now with their season already heading towards oblivion, things could yet become a lot worse for Newcastle because after losing Ayoze Perez, yet more important players may depart the club this summer.

The Daily Mail recently claimed that Villa are leading the race to sign Newcastle’s man between the sticks, Martin Dubravka, as they continue their spending spree following promotion.

Only twelve months ago, Newcastle had just finished in the top 10 in the Premier League, whilst Villa were heading into a financial mess.

Fast forward to today, and the ambition Villa’s new owners are showing, is something the Toon Army faithful have been crying out for at their club for a long time now.

Therefore, Villa, who let’s not forget are a newly-promoted club, potentially signing Dubravka this summer, would simply be yet another slap in the face of Newcastle and their supporters.

There’s no doubt that the Midlands giants are a massive club, just like Newcastle, but when the latter bounced straight back up two years ago, they should have been showing the ambition Villa are showing now.

Instead, the only ambition they will show is Steve Bruce, a man sacked by Villa last October, trying to persuade players such as Dubravka to stay at the club.
