West Brom took advantage of Villa’s financial struggles to bring in Johnstone from Manchester United.
The goalkeeper had spent the last two seasons at Villa Park, and become a crowd favourite, but Steve Bruce’s side didn’t have the money to buy him on a permanent deal and West Brom took advantage.
Albion and Villa now look set to go head to head again for Windass, and if Villa could get a deal over the line, they could at least show that they are ready to compete with their Midlands rivals this season.
Villa’s financial worries have been reduced after their recent takeover, and signing Windass would prove that they are back in the market for talent again, after a slow summer so far.
