Aston Villa are said to be interested in signing James Collins, who is currently a free agent.

According to the Birmingham Mail, James Collins could be Aston Villa’s alternative signing, if they fail to sign John Terry, but that would smack of desperation.

Collins has been out of contract since his deal at West Ham United expired at the end of last season.

The Welsh defender is still looking for a new club, and Villa could be prepared to offer him a deal.

But it is one thing for Villa to sign a player of Terry’s calibre, and another one entirely if they go after Collins.

Collins may have proven to be a solid option in the Premier League throughout his career, but he is now 35, and he was showing signs of age towards the back end of last campaign.

Collins would have no re-sale value whatsoever for Villa, and would likely command a big wage.

And if Collins is brought to Villa, then it would once again show that Steve Bruce is very short-term in his thinking with transfers, which has been a criticism aimed at him from the claret and blues fan base.
