Celtic have reportedly had an offer for Romaine Sawyers turn down, whilst Aston Villa’s Dean Smith worked with him during their time at Brentford.

Aston Villa should re-join the race for Brentford’s Romaine Sawyers, who has seen interest in him rise recently, this time from the likes of Celtic and Stoke City.
The Daily Mail have claimed that Brentford have rejected a bid of £1.5 million from Scottish Premiership champions Celtic for Sawyers, with the report also stating that Villa were keen on the 27-year-old during the winter transfer window.
Dean Smith worked with Sawyers during his time at Griffin Park and he will be well aware of what he’s capable of in the middle of the park.
And with that recent bid by Celtic, albeit it was turned down, it should give Villa a nudge that they should push through a deal for the player because it seems as though it may not take much to secure his services.
Villa are in need of a player to sit in front of that defence, and whilst Sawyers isn’t a bonafide defensive-minded midfielder, he can play that role in a forward-thinking setup. Simply put, in a certain Dean Smith system.
Following their promotion to the Premier League, Villa are yet to sign a central midfielder, and someone like Sawyers would be a no-risk purchase for the club.

The Birmingham-born player would add depth to Smith’s squad, and he could even argue that he is better than the likes of Henri Lansbury and Birkir Bjarnason, who are currently the back-up options in B6.
In recent seasons, Sawyers has proven in the Championship that he is good enough to take that step up to a top-flight team, whether it be in England or Scotland.
Of course, the quality and competition is a lot tougher in the Premier League, but given Sawyers skills on the ball and ability to pick out that sharp pass, he would compliment what Smith already has at his disposal.
