Aston Villa boss Dean Smith is said to be keen to snap up the Bournemouth midfielder.

According to The Irish Independent, Aston Villa are looking at signing Harry Arter and he would be a big upgrade on Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan, if he was to arrive.

Dean Smith has made no secret of his desire to improve Villa’s defence, and Arter could do that.

The Bournemouth man is a very effective shield and a combative presence in front of the backline.

Villa have defensive minded midfielders already at the club, but the likes of Whelan and Jedinak both have question marks hanging over them.

The Villa pair are both reaching the twilights of their careers, and Arter would be a big upgrade on either of them.

If Smith could line up with Arter and John McGinn in the centre of the pitch then Villa would have one of the toughest-tackling midfield pairings in the Championship.

And if the claret and blues can strike a deal to bring in Arter it should be welcomed at Villa Park.
