Aston Villa are short in the left-back area as they should look towards Everton’s Leighton Baines in January.
The problems keep mounting up for Aston Villa manager Dean Smith as his side suffered yet another setback in their race for promotion.
Villa were beaten 3-0 at Wigan over the weekend and the club’s defensive fragilities were on show for all to see once again.
Left-back Neil Taylor, who was at fault for the first goal, is the only recognisable and senior player in that position as Villa need to add depth to that area this month.
One player they can look towards to solve their major problem is Everton ace Leighton Baines, who has found himself benched by manager Marko Silva since September.
The 34-year-old has only played four Premier League matches for the Toffees and last played for his side at the start of the month when they beat Lincoln City 2-1 in the FA Cup.
According to Transfermarkt, Baines’ contract at Goodison Park runs out in the summer, so if Villa were to add him to their ranks then they could potentially snap him up for free in the summer.
Whilst his age may not appeal to the Villa supporters, many would agree that he would be an upgrade on what the club has at this moment in time.
Added with that, Smith’s side need some extra bite in defence and someone who can add depth in that area whilst they also deal with FFP.
Considering all of that, Baines may just fit the bill at Villa, but if the opportunity of signing a younger player does come along, and it fits in with FFP, then they may just go down that road.
