Aston Villa would be smart to make a bid for Stoke City’s Ibrahim Afellay, if he is available on a free transfer.

According to a report in the Daily Telegraph, Stoke City are set to release Ibrahim Afellay at the end of the season, and that could make him an appealing option for Aston Villa.

Afellay has failed to make much of an impact this season at Stoke, which means that they are said to be willing to let him leave on a free transfer.

And Villa should now offer him an escape route from the Britannia Stadium.

Afellay has struggled with injury problems during his time in England, but he has previously proven to be a valuable asset even at Premier League level.

After being schooled at Barcelona, Afellay is blessed with a great deal of technical ability.

The Dutchman is totally comfortable with the ball at his feet, and he could offer Villa a great deal of creativity.

It is not yet clear whether the claret and blues will be playing Premier League or Championship football this season, but regardless of what division they are in, Afellay would be an excellent addition.

And Villa should already have the 29-year-old near the top of their wishlist for the summer, as he could be a real bargain signing.
