Aston Villa may be focusing on Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, but they have also been considering a move for Ralf Rangnick.
That’s according to 90Min, who claim that Rangnick has been the source of internal discussions over at Villa Park.
The same goes for Roberto Martinez, Paulo Fonseca, Kasper Hjulmand and Graham Potter, but Rangnick is a particularly interesting case.
The 63-year-old hasn’t been a permanent manager since leaving Schalke just months after taking them to Champions League semi-finals in 2011.
Rangnick has had two spells in charge of Leipzig, but both as an interim coach.
The focus of the German’s work over the last 10 years has been away from the pitch and more on recruitment and development.
That’s what Rangnick did with Red Bull’s football operations, and is now Head of Sports and Development at Lokomotiv Moscow.
Last month, The Chronicle reported that Rangnick fancied becoming Newcastle United’s director of football, but that now looks unlikely.
Rangnick is still highly-regarded as a coach though, and is credited with being Jurgen Klopp’s inspiration.
With Newcastle going a different way, Rangnick now looks to be a real option for Villa if they can’t get the Gerrard deal over the line.
