Paul Merson has written in The Daily Star that Aston Villa attacking midfielder Philippe Coutinho has proved him wrong after watching him in action against Leeds United in midweek.

The Sky Sports pundit believes that Coutinho, signed on loan from Barcelona in the January transfer window, was brilliant against Leeds in the Premier League game at Villa Park on Wednesday evening.

The former Liverpool star, who can also play as a winger, scored a goal and provided two assists.

The match between Villa and Leeds finished 3-3.

Former Arsenal and Villa star Merson has admitted that Coutinho has proved him wrong.

Merson wrote in The Daily Star: “Philippe Coutinho is proving me wrong. I didn’t think he could get back to his level at Aston Villa.

“But he was different class against Leeds. He knows what he’s doing before he even gets the ball. He was absolutely unbelievable.

“He will make the players around him better, 100 per cent. If you make runs like Jacob Ramsey makes runs, he will find you.”

Philippe Coutinho a star for Aston Villa

In our view, Coutinho has proved to be a brilliant signing for Villa.

We knew from his time in the Premier League with Liverpool just how good the 29-year-old is.

The Brazil international has hit the ground running at Villa and has already established himself as a key figure in manager Steven Gerrard’s side.

Coutinho has scored two goals and provided two assists in three Premier League appearances for the Villans during his loan spell so far.
