Aston Villa are now willing to spend heavily to sign Mikel Merino – who was sold by Newcastle back in 2018.

What’s the story?

Well, it is said that Unai Emery is determined to bring the Spain international to Villa Park – according to Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish news outlet believe Aston Villa are even willing to pay Merino’s €65m (£57m) release clause, such is their desire to grant Emery his wish.

However, the Real Sociedad No.8 is happy in San Sebastián, and does not want to join the Villans.

Interestingly, Mundo Deportivo add that Liverpool want to sign Merino in the summer transfer window.

Interest in the 26-year-old comes after he scored one goal and impressively provided seven assists in 16 La Liga appearances so far this season.

Merino has also been entrusted to captain Real Sociedad occasionally this term, which speaks volumes about his leadership qualities.

Mundo Deportivo believe Emery knows Real Sociedad very well, hence his interest in Merino, and also made attempts to bring Roberto Olabe – the club’s Sporting Director – to the Midlands with him.

Aston Villa have an alternative to Newcastle castoff

If Merino cannot be persuaded to join Aston Villa, then Emery does at least have an alternative – Matteo Guendouzi.

Foot Mercato in France believe the 51-year-old has already spoken to the Marseille No.6 about a move to Villa Park, with the pair maintaining a strong relationship from their time together at Arsenal.

Birmingham Live even believe Guendouzi is keen on reuniting with Emery at Aston Villa.

That update came after the Evening Standard revealed that the Villans had already sent an offer to Marseille for the France international, so that deal certainly seems like it could end up materialising before deadline day.

Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, with Aston Villa targeting a new midfielder.
