Aston Villa have reportedly entered the race to sign Borussia Monchengladbach star Marcus Thuram, with Arsenal and Tottenham also believed to be interested in the France international ahead of the January transfer window.

According to L’Equipe, Unai Emery has had his eye on Thuram for quite some time, with the 25-year-old forward having one of his best seasons to date as the attacker bagged an impressive 13 goals in all competitions before being selected by Didier Deschamps for the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Whilst Thuram has only featured off the bench in Qatar, the versatile attacker’s club form has drawn plenty of interest from across Europe in recent weeks. And with the forward’s contract expiring in the summer, a move in January feels like a certainty at this stage.

As per the Sun, Arsenal, Liverpool, Newcastle United and Tottenham are all interested in signing Thuram, however, Villa’s new interest could lead Emery’s side to win the race for the Frenchman, who Wolfsburg sporting director Marcel Schafer labelling the attacker as a ‘world-class’ talent.

Indeed, Villa have had a knack in recent transfer windows of pulling off unlikely transfers, with last summer alone seeing the Villa Park side win the race for both Diego Carlos and Boubacar Kamara, two players who were expected to join UEFA Champions League sides.

And the same could now be said for Thuram, who might be tempted to sign for Villa given how high Emery’s reputation is and the potential places the Spanish manager could take the Premier League club if he manages to recruit the players he wants for his new project.

Villa are a club who have always had the right ideas to take them to the next level but never the right execution to deliver on such potential. Yet Emery’s appointment and the potential signing of Thuram could steer the ship in the right direction ahead of 2023.

After all, Thuram has been one of the best attackers in Europe this season, and playing for a club like Villa could help both the player and the team in achieving their long-term goals of becoming competitors in the Premier League if given the time.
