Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet is close to joining Aston Villa and returning to the Premier League.
That is according to a report from Marca.
It claims that Clement Lenglet‘s departure from Barcelona is imminent and that Aston Villa are the club who are best-placed to sign him.
The 28-year-old spent last season on loan at Tottenham Hotspur, but a move back to north London now looks unlikely.
However, it appears that Lenglet will still get the chance to return to the Premier League thanks to Villa.
Clement Lenglet does not need to be a priority for Aston Villa
On paper, Lenglet could be a solid addition to Unai Emery’s squad. He is a very experienced defender who can play at the highest level after making appearances for Barcelona and France.
His national team manager Didier Deschamps has described him as a “technical” footballer who is extremely calm on the ball.
Even so, Villa do not look to be in desperate need of another centre-back right now. Tyrone Mings has, of course, picked up a serious injury, but Emery still has the likes of Pau Torres and Diego Carlos to call upon.
If the Spaniard does feel there is a need to bring in a new central defender for extra cover, then it may make more sense to sign someone of a lower profile who is going to be content with a squad role.
However, if Emery is looking for a new first-choice centre-half, then Lenglet is certainly a good option to consider, especially this late in the transfer window.
From the France international’s point of view, he would be getting another shot of playing in the best division in football and for a side on the up, so it is not hard to see why a move to Villa Park appeals to him.
