Villa struck a surprise move over the summer by luring Critchley away from his position as Blackpool boss.
Steven Gerrard lost his assistant manager in Michael Beale, who moved on to become Queens Park Rangers manager.
Villa needed a replacement and pulled off a great deal for Critchley – but it didn’t exactly help Gerrard.

Critchley and Gerrard knew each other from the Liverpool setup and their reunion seemed perfect for Villa, especially given Critchley’s reputation at Blackpool.
The 44-year-old guided Blackpool into the Championship and then kept them up last season.
Critchley’s decision to leave a managerial job to become an assistant left many baffled and it didn’t really last long.
Gerrard lost his job as Villa boss last month after a disappointing start to the season and that meant Critchley was relieved of his duties too.
Critchley finds himself out of work but whilst Villa chose to get rid, other clubs would seemingly love to have him.
The Sun report that both Luton Town and Wigan Athletic are keen on making Critchley their new manager.
Luton have just lost their boss Nathan Jones to Southampton as the Welshman was picked out as the replacement for Ralph Hasenhuttl.
Talks between the Hatters and Critchley are expected very soon but they are also considering St Mirren boss Stephen Robinson.
Then there is Wigan, who sacked Leam Richardson in midweek after a difficult run of form.
The Latics are eyeing up Critchley but their former player Shaun Maloney is interested in the job.
Critchley was always likely to generate Championship interest and it looks like two jobs may be available to him just weeks after leaving Villa.
