Aston Villa may reportedly be about to lose their top goalscorer, so should they try to take advantage of Jermain Defoe’s availability?
Aston Villa have been handed a major setback during the early stages of the January transfer window with The Sun reporting that Chelsea have accepted an £18 million bid from Wolves for Tammy Abraham.
Abraham is scheduled to spend the season on loan with the Villans. But it appears that there may be a chance that he could have already made his final appearance for the club.
The youngster has scored 16 goals in the Championship this season. And with Dean Smith adding goalkeeper Lovre Kalinic to his ranks, it appeared that Villa were starting to address the issues that will allow them to push for a promotion spot they clearly have the potential to bag.
However, with Abraham potentially heading to Molineux, Smith has been handed a problem as large as the predicament that saw the club turn to Kalinic before the window had even opened.
But perhaps Villa should look at Jermain Defoe after a report from Sky Sports suggested that Eddie Howe is ready to let the Premier League legend leave Bournemouth this month.
Defoe – who earns £65,000-a-week with the Cherries, according to The Scottish Sun – is clearly coming towards the end of his career, but he may be worth considering given that he has managed to score at a decent rate at virtually every club he has been at.
And as Abraham’s loan was only meant to run until the end of the season anyway, Smith should not be reluctant to use a short-term fix to boost their attacking options as they look to get themselves back in the top six.
Losing Abraham would be a terrible blow for Villa to suffer given his form since arriving. But perhaps signing Defoe could be a fantastic way for the club to respond to the potential setback.
