After a miserable start to the Championship season which had many supporters calling for Steve Bruce’s head and predicting another season of struggle in England’s second tier, a wave of optimism is now beginning to sweep over Aston Villa.

The Midland giants turned around a horror run with a 4-2 triumph over highly-fancied promotion pushers Norwich City, one of Villa’s most exciting performances in living memory. And while Conor Hourihane’s hat-trick dominated the headlines, the performance of a homegrown teenager by the name of Andre Green has got Villa supporters feeling a little more positive.

A product of Villa’s prosperous academy, the 19-year-old netted his first senior goal at the 18th attempt against Daniel Farke’s Canaries, curling a picturebook strike into the far top corner. It was almost a coming of age moment for one of their most promising players in many a year.

Needless to say, therefore, that new-found optimism could come crashing down in an instant if Villa sold one of their prized assets with just a few days to go before the end of the transfer window.

According to The Mirror, a huge number of Premier League clubs have been tracking Green for some time and speculation is likely to intensify in the coming days. Rated as a bigger talent than Jack Grealish, Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Manchester City and Liverpool are all watching a player who has been at Villa since he was nine years old.

Yet, it’s Green that gives Villa fans hope for the future. The rise of a homegrown hero is the perfect remedy when your fortunes look bleak and Green also possesses that maverick genius Villa need to turn dour draws and narrow defeats into valuable points.

To put it simply, Villa can’t afford to sell.
