Aston Villa would be foolish to make a move for Peterborough United striker Jack Marriott, as has been suggested in the Daily Mail.

Villa are known to want a striker in the January transfer window, and Marriott is said to be on their wishlist.

The 23-year-old has been in wonderful form this season, scoring 17 goals in the first half of the campaign for Posh.

However, Villa may be left disappointed if they were to move for Marriott now.

The rapid forward has the potential to go on to become a leading Championship striker in the future, but he is far from ready to lead the line for a promotion chasing side in the second tier right now.

Posh have had some brilliant strikers over the years, but Marriott is closer to Conor Washington in his development, than either Dwight Gayle or Britt Assombalonga.

Washington has struggled since moving to Queens Park Rangers, and while Marriott may be more of a natural goalscorer than the Northern Ireland international, he is still far from the finished article.

Marriott’s goal total is one of the most impressive in the entirety of the Football League, but he could have hit the headlines even more regularly if he was slightly sharper in front of goal.

And, given that Steve Bruce needs a player who is immediately ready to make an impact in Villa’s first-team, he would be far better off going for a more tried and tested player at Championship level.
