The Senegal international has shown glimpses of quality this season.
It is looking like there is plenty of change afoot at Aston Villa.
The club look set to drop down to the Championship next season and Villa are likely to want to get rid of some of their highest earners – especially some of the summer signings who have not quite cut it in England.
One such player is Senegal international Idrissa Gana Gueye.
According to The Guardian the Premier League club paid Lille £9 million for the player in the summer but he has not had the impact that Villa would have wanted.
But it turns out that he does better a more successful French football recruit in one key statistic this season.
| Position | Team | Interception | Appearances | Mins Played | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Idrissa Gueye | MF | Aston Villa | 132 | 29 | 2,537 |
| N’Golo Kanté | MF | Leicester | 130 | 31 | 2,480 |
| Laurent Koscielny | DF | Arsenal | 98 | 26 | 2,216 |
| Claudio Yacob | MF | West Brom | 97 | 28 | 2,357 |
| Andrew Surman | MF | Bournemouth | 95 | 32 | 2,880 |
As the attached table shows the Aston Villa midfielder has the most interceptions in the Premier League this season, beating the much-lauded N’Golo Kante of Leicester City in the process:
This stat is of course meaningless when considering the fact Villa are bottom of the league and facing relegation this weekend.
But it does show that Gueye has something about him and could potentially make it in the Premier League.
