Aston Villa went into the international break feeling slightly more optimistic about the rest of their season. Under Steve Bruce results and performances have improved for Villa and they are now 14th in the Championship table – just five points off the play-off places.

One player who has benefitted at Aston Villa since Bruce’s arrival is Gary Gardner.

The midfielder has been used much more regularly since Bruce arrived and has had a significant impact on Aston Villa’s performances.

He has spoken to Vital Football this week about his impressive October. He picked his highlight of the month, scoring against local rivals Birmingham City:

“The highlight (of the month) was obviously scoring my first goal for the club – against Birmingham City. My aim is to continue working hard, hopefully stay in the team and help the club be successful.”

That goal was his first for the club, amazingly nearly five years since making his debut for the club in December 2011.

Gardner has spent much of the past five years out on loan and on the medical table with serious injury trouble.

Now he seems to have pushed his injury problems to one side and is looking like a star of the Aston Villa promotion push.

The local lad will be hoping he can maintain his place in the Aston Villa first-team going forward.
