Ashley Westwood featured for 90 minutes against Norwich, but contributed little.
Ashley Westwood has been a regular for Aston Villa once again this season, featuring in 19 of 21 Championship games.
15 of those have come as a starter, although after last night’s disappointing display against Norwich City, manager Steve Bruce may decide to revoke this as an option.
Aston Villa’s Ashley Westwood in action
Villa lost the game 1-0 at Carrow Road, and currently sit in 13th position in the Championship table as a result.
Westwood played all 90 minutes of the fixture, but despite this, managed only five forward passes.
This came as he attempted just 21 passes, completing 18 – with an 85% pass completion rate misleading if not examined more closely.
| Total Pass | Accurate Pass | Fwd Pass | Backward Pass | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ashley Westwood | 21 | 18 | 5 | 6 |
Defensively it was not as though Westwood could use that to counter his lack of ambition in possession. He made just one tackle, and one interception.
The Mirror recently reported that Aston Villa are seeking a new midfielder as they bid to get back into the play-off race.
Last night’s evidence showed how important this is, as if Villa are serious about rapidly climbing the table between now and May, they simply need a player who can offer more than Westwood does.
