Middlesbrough midfielder Stewart Downing is said to be potentially on Steve Bruce’s wishlist at Aston Villa.

According to the Express and Star, Aston Villa are weighing up a bid for Stewart Downing, but if they want to sign the Middlesbrough midfielder they may have to act quickly.

Boro have made Downing available on a free this summer, the Gazette report, and interest is starting to build.

The Gazette suggest that Brighton & Hove Albion are interested in Downing, and a number of MLS teams are also circling.

Downing is believed to be willing to move to America, and Villa may, therefore, have to act quickly if Steve Bruce wants to bring the 32-year-old back to Villa Park.

Villa do not want to be left behind by some of their rivals in the race for Downing’s signature, otherwise doing a deal could be difficult.

Just how strong Villa’s interest in Downing is, at this current stage, remains to be seen though.

The former claret and blues enjoyed a great first spell at Villa Park, earlier in his career, but he is reaching the twilight of his career now.

Villa are yet to make a signing this summer, with Bruce’s side having a limited amount of funds to spend.
