Huddersfield Town defender Terence Kongolo was linked with Aston Villa over the summer.
Huddersfield Town’s seven-game unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt on Saturday afternoon as they were beaten 3-1 away at Preston North End.
Danny Cowley has started to turn the tide with the Terriers, but they were undone in the first half as Jayden Stockley and Alan Browne put Preston 2-0 up.
Paul Gallagher added a third from the penalty spot, and whilst Juninho Bacuna did pull one back late on, Huddersfield were well beaten in their trip to Deepdale.
A number of players didn’t impress for Huddersfield, and one of them was defender Terence Kongolo, who was making his return from a calf injury after around six weeks out.
The Dutchman was put in at left back against Preston, but Tom Barkhuizen enjoyed great success against him, and Kongolo then gave away a penalty with a bizarre handball.
Kongolo, 25, joined Huddersfield for around £17.5million (Goal) in 2018 after a strong loan spell, but he’s now left fighting for his place under Cowley after a poor display.
Kongolo could have earned a move back to the Premier League over the summer as Aston Villa wanted to sign him according to the Daily Mail, but ended up going with Matt Targett instead – a decision they should probably feel pleased with.
Huddersfield fans have been slating Kongolo for his performance against Preston, slating him as ‘awful’ whilst claiming that he clearly doesn’t want to be with the club anymore, and shouldn’t be playing ahead of Jaden Brown, leaving Villa to no doubt feel like they had a near miss.
