Rio Ferdinand has praised Matty Cash whilst suggesting that Aston Villa could now make millions off the Poland international.

Poland got their World Cup campaign underway on Tuesday evening as they faced Mexico.

The game ended in a 0-0 draw with Robert Lewndowski failing to score from the penalty spot.

Poland will view it as a decent start and at least they didn’t lose, but it will be tinged with a sense of what could have been.

Rio Ferdinand has praised Matty Cash

Fans who maybe hadn’t been keeping up with Matty Cash’s international allegiance may have been baffled when seeing him line up for Poland last night.

Cash, 25, was born in Slough but is of Polish descent through his mother and became a Poland international in November 2021.

Now a first-choice player for Poland and in line to feature prominently at the World Cup, Cash is reaping the rewards of his decision to switch nationality.

England just have so many right backs that Cash would always struggle to get a spot with the Three Lions.

Cash is a quality Premier League right back though and Poland will be delighted that he made himself available for selection.

Before the draw with Mexico, pundit Rio Ferdinand moved to rave about Cash and his impact for Aston Villa.

Ferdinand told BBC Sport that he thinks Cash’s rise is ‘crazy’ because his big move from Nottingham Forest in 2020 looked a little outlandish.

Ferdinand now believes that Villa could command double their money, raking in over £40million if they wanted to sell Cash any time soon.

The former England ace added that Cash has been ‘fantastic’ since joining Villa and his improvement has been great to watch.

“It’s crazy because when he signed for Villa for 20-ish million pounds, everyone’s eyebrows were raised thinking ‘where has this come from?’ but now they could get double their money maybe now if they wanted to sell him,” said Ferdinand.

“He’s been a fantastic signing for Villa but the way he has improved and his mentality are a testament to him,” he added.

Whether any Premier League clubs are interested in Cash is unclear but if he keeps shining for Villa and Poland, maybe there will be some suitors down the line.
