Villa posed a threat all day and went ahead in the second half as Kortney Hause buried a header past David De Gea.
There was late drama as United grabbed an injury-time penalty – and that’s where Martinez tried to annoy United.
As Bruno Fernandes picked up the ball to take the penalty, Martinez was right by him encouraging Cristiano Ronaldo take it instead.
Fernandes stepped up and blazed his penalty over the bar, with Martinez dancing in front of the United fans to celebrate.
Villa managed to hang on for the win, with Martinez no doubt delighted to keep his clean sheet.
Martinelli praises Martinez
Martinez continues to shine at Villa, putting Arsenal’s decision to sell him last year under the microscope.
The Argentinian would surely be Arsenal’s first-choice stopper now, but Arsenal sold him and went with Bernd Leno last season.
Martinez remains popular with some Arsenal players, especially attacker Gabriel Martinelli.
As Martinez celebrated Villa’s win on Instsagram, Martinelli replied simply saying ‘what a player’.
Many Arsenal fans likely feel the same way, and may not be looking forward to facing Martinez with Villa next month.
