John Terry’s hopes of becoming the new Bristol City boss look to be over.
The Aston Villa assistant has been strongly linked with the Ashton Gate vacancy, following Lee Johnson’s sacking at the start of this month.
And according to The Daily Mail, Terry had expressed an interest in leaving Villa to commence his managerial career with the Robins.
But the same publication reports that Bristol City have instead reached an agreement to appoint Chris Hughton – the former boss of Aston Villa’s city rivals, Birmingham.
Hughton has been out of work since leaving Brighton and Hove Albion, whom he led to and kept in the Premier League, at the end of last season.
What that means for Terry’s future remains to be seen.
The former England captain remains under contract for another year at Aston Villa, although much could hinge on the club’s ability to stay in the top flight.
Villa visit West Ham United on the Premier League’s final day, and will survive as long as neither of Watford or Bournemouth can better their result.
Bristol City ended the Championship season in 12th position.
