Aston Villa defender Tommy Elphick is said to be set to join Reading.

Villa loaned out Elphick last campaign, when his first team chances were limited.
The central defender went on to impress at the Madejski Stadium, and now Reading are closing in on a deal to sign him.

Villa could have felt confident last season that they could cope with the loss of Elphick.
However, Steve Bruce’s side really could have done with the former Bournemouth sticking around next term now.

The loss of John Terry is a major blow to Villa’s defence, and James Chester’s future at Villa Park is far from certain.
There are fears that a Premier League side could come in and take Chester this summer, with Villa needing to sell.
And if Bruce’s side also lose Elphick now, then their central defensive options will start to look very poor for next term.
