Aston Villa boss Steven Gerrard may want to sign Joe Gomez, but it sounds like he will have to ask for a move away from Liverpool.

Villa were active in January by signing Lucas Digne and Philippe Coutinho. You can absolutely expect them to be busy in the summer too.

Gerrard’s attempts to build Villa up have taken some knocks in recent weeks and he will be desperate to add new faces.

One of the key targets appears to be Gomez, with Gerrard seeking to raid his former club Liverpool.

Gomez has endured a frustrating season, seemingly relegated to fourth-choice centre back. Ibrahima Konate has come in and impressed, vying with Joel Matip to partner Virgil van Dijk.

That has resulted in Gomez sitting on the bench more often than not, though he has featured of late.

With Liverpool competing for a quadruple, Jurgen Klopp has been rotating his squad.

Trent Alexander-Arnold has dipped in and out of late, and with Neco Williams on loan at Fulham, Gomez has stepped up to play at right back.

Gomez played there against Newcastle on Saturday afternoon. His performance was so impressive that Andrew Robertson called him ‘different class’ and Jamie Carragher branded him ‘outstanding’.

Gomez now needs to figure out what he wants. It’s likely that he will remain fourth-choice centre back and second-choice right back next season.

That may not be enough to get Gomez back into the England squad for the World Cup, so his Liverpool future isn’t nailed on.

The Birmingham Mail now report that Gerrard is ‘really keen’ on bringing Gomez to Villa Park.

However, it’s suggested that Gomez will have to force his way out of Liverpool. With two years left on his deal, Liverpool aren’t under pressure to sell just yet.

That means Gomez may have to ask for Liverpool to let him go – and that just doesn’t seem very likely.

That may leave Gerrard and Villa having to look elsewhere this summer as they chase defensive reinforcements.
