Liverpool beat Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa 1-0 on Saturday afternoon – and Jamie Carragher has defended the Villa boss on Twitter.

Liverpool claim victory on Gerrard’s Anfield return

This one was circled on the calendar as soon as Gerrard became Villa boss last month.

Just weeks into Gerrard’s Villa reign, he would be taking his side to Liverpool – the place where he became a hero.

Gerrard has made a fine start as Villa boss but he couldn’t claim a shock win on his return to Anfield.

Mohamed Salah’s second-half penalty won the game for Liverpool, giving them a narrow 1-0 win.

Liverpool fans gave Gerrard a great reception but will ultimately just be happy with the three points.

Carragher defends Villa boss Gerrard

Gerrard’s sole focus right now is on Aston Villa, even if some think he will be the next Liverpool boss.

After the game, Gerrard admitted that he wasn’t happy with the refereeing at Anfield.

Gerrard felt the penalty decision on Salah was soft, and also felt Villa should have had two penalties of their own.

That didn’t go down well with some Liverpool fans, but what do they expect? Gerrard left Liverpool in 2015, and whilst it’s still a club very close to his heart, he has to concentrate on Villa.

Jamie Carragher took to Twitter to simply state ‘spot on’ in response to one Reds fan defending Gerrard.

It’s clear that Carragher agrees that Gerrard did nothing wrong in criticising decisions made at Liverpool because he is focused on Villa – even if it riles some up.
