Brentford defender Yoann Barbet has commented on his future.
Brentford defender Yoann Barbet has been quoted by Football.London as saying that he doesn’t know where his future lies as he prepares to become a free agent.
Barbet, 25, came up through the Bordeaux ranks but made his name in French football with Chamois Niortais, earning himself a 2015 move to Brentford.
Capable of playing as a left back or centre back, Barbet has has made more than 100 appearances for the Bees, giving them great service over the last four years.
The Frenchman is currently impressing under Thomas Frank in a left-sided centre back role in a three-man defence, but his time at Griffin Park may be coming to an end.
Barbet is out of contract this summer, and with no sign of a new deal being signed any time soon, it seems that he will be moving on.
The Express and Star noted in December that Aston Villa – managed by Barbet’s former Brentford boss Dean Smith – are keen to land Barbet to bolster their defence.
Having featured prominently under Smith, it’s no great surprise that Barbet is attracting Villa’s interest, especially as he could be available for absolutely nothing.
Now, Barbet has suggested that he doesn’t know what his future holds, and whilst he loves Brentford, he may well choose to move on – and even hinted at joining another Championship club when his deal expires this summer,
“I don’t know,” said Barbet. “I’ve been here for four years and had good spells and bad spells. Before this run of fixtures, the last time I had a run of games in my position was the first six months under Dean [Smith]. Now I’m playing every game in my position and enjoying my football. This formation means that there is one more space at centre-back, which gives me an opportunity to play more.”
“I love this club and I do everything I can. The fans are great with me and that makes me really happy because it shows I’m doing a good job. I’m not trying to present myself in a certain way for them to love me, I’m just being myself. It’s good to see all the love from the fans, but I’m approaching the end of my contract and, after four years, maybe I want to see another country and another league. I could end up staying in the Championship, it’s hard to say,” he added.
