The A-League will welcome Western Melbourne later this year, and it’s now time for them to start filling out their squad – even though they don’t have a manager yet.
Greek midfielder Panagiotis Kone has already joined, and they have now snapped up an Australian international in right back Risdon.
Risdon, 26, has been starring in the A-League with Perth Glory, picking up 14 appearances for the Australian national team in the process.
Risdon has now decided to trade Perth for Melbourne, penning a two-year deal which will come into effect this summer.
Joining a brand new club is something of a bold move for Risdon, becoming Western Melbourne’s first Australian player, and ruling out a move to England.
The Age recently reported that Aston Villa were interested in signing Risdon, having been impressed with his displays in Australia.
Risdon won’t be heading to Villa Park alongside international teammate Mile Jedinak having made a decision on his future, but Dean Smith and co shouldn’t be too disheartened.
Villa have already got their right back for next season and beyond in Caen’s Frederic Guilbert, with the Frenchman a more impressive signing than if they had landed Risdon, who will now hope that his bold move pays off.
