Aston Villa linked forward Neal Maupay comments on his future

Aston Villa were said to be keen on Brentford striker Neal Mapuay in January.

Brentford striker Neal Maupay has told the Daily Mirror that he wants to help the Bees get near the top of the league before moving on, despite links with Aston Villa.

The Birmingham Mail reported how Villa were interested in signing Maupay last month, but no deal ever materialised.

Villa could still move for the rapid forward, but Maupay has suggested that he is happy at Brentford.

“Good things will happen in the future so it’s a good club to be part of.

“If you ask any player they will tell you they want to play in the top league. That’s what we are working towards. I feel this club will make it. I want to help them get there and then see what happens.”

Brentford are currently in 17th place in the Championship table, but they have been in better form in recent weeks.

Villa, meanwhile, are sat in ninth place in the table – six points ahead of Maupay’s side.

If Maupay was to move to Villa he could improve Dean Smith’s attacking options for next campaign.

Villa are likely to lose Tammy Abraham at the end of the season, when his loan spell expires.

And Smith may feel that going after a new number nine is his top priority in the next transfer window.

Brentford are said by the Daily Mirror to have put a £20 million asking price on Maupay, so he would not come cheaply.
