Aston Villa look to be closing on a fourth permanent manager since February 2015, but club legend Peter Withe has urged owner Tony Xia to put Brian Little in temporary charge until the end of the season.

Xia sacked Roberto di Matteo last week after only four months in charge, and speculation has been rife as to who will be the Italian’s replacement.

Leading candidates such as Huddersfield Town boss David Wagner have ruled themselves out, and it appears as though former Hull City manager Steve Bruce is the heavy favourite.

However, Villa legend Withe believes that the solution, for the time being at least, could be right under the club’s nose in the form of former player and manager and current advisor to the board Little.

The 1982 European Cup final goalscorer wrote in a tweet to Xia: “[Despite] all the names thrown into the hat, think they should consider Brian Little till [sic] end of season. [He] knows the club and what is needed.”

Little, who spent his entire playing career at Villa between 1970 and 1980, has already managed the club from 1994 to 1998, and is the last manager to lead them to a major trophy with the 1996 League Cup triumph.

With the exception of a brief stint in charge of Jersey earlier this year, he has not held a managerial position since leaving non-league Gainsborough Trinity in 2011.

However, he undoubtedly knows the foundation of the club well, and has been on the board since early this year under Xia.
