The Irishman is hoping for an improvement under new gaffer Steve Bruce at Villa Park.

Aston Villa legend Paul McGrath has backed the appointment of Steve Bruce as the new manager at Villa Park.

Aston Villa finally confirmed that Bruce, a former gaffer at local rivals Birmingham City, was the new manager yesterday after a week of speculation.

Bruce, who left Hull City in the summer after winning promotion last term through the play-offs, takes over with the club 19th in the Championship after a difficult start to life in the second-tier.

That poor start saw Roberto Di Matteo sacked by new chairman Tony Xia and Bruce is now the man being tasked with taking Villa up the table.

Irishman McGrath, who spent seven years at Villa Park, had this to say on Twitter eealier today about the appointment – clearly pleased that Bruce had been given the nod:

Bruce has plenty of experience of winning promotion from the Championship, having done so twice apiece with Birmingham and Hull.

Villa are still not far off the top six considering how many games are left in the season and the quality of players available to Bruce at Villa Park.

If he can get off to a good start, this might be the start of a brilliant story.
