Aston Villa sit in 17th place after 10 Championship games.
Villa goalkeeper Jimmy Rimmer is replaced by substitute Nigel Spink
Aston Villa legend Nigel Spink has called on current Villa chairman Tony Xia to give Roberto Di Matteo time to turn things around at Villa Park – as reported by the Express and Star.
Spink is of course a legend at Villa, not least because of his heroics in the 1982 European Cup final against Bayern Munich.
He went on to play over 400 games for the club and is still a big figure at Villa.
New owner Dr Tony Xia during the press conference
He believes that the Italian should be given the time he needs to get Villa firing from their new outspoken chairman Xia.
Spink stated to the Express and Star:
“I think he should be given more time to get things right, probably another 10 games.
“I was encouraged by the players he brought in over the summer and the frustrating thing is had they been able to hold onto some of the leads they would be near the top.
“I just think it is too soon to start talking about changing the manager.”
Aston Villa have struggled to get into any real form since they were relegated to the Championship from the Premier League last term.
Aston Villa manager Roberto Di Matteo
Despite some excellent summer signings and some good performances, they have struggled to close games out, often conceding late, to cost them vital wins this term.
Currently, after 10 games in the Championship, they sit in 17th position – despite only losing two games all season.
But they have drawn five on the bounce and turning those ones into threes could see them steadily move up the table.
So Xia would certainly be wise to give Di Matteo a little time at Villa Park.
