Aston Villa lost yet again in the Championship last night as their horror form continued.

They suffered a 2-0 loss against promotion favourites Newcastle United at St James’ Park, with a Yoann Gouffran goal and an own goal from Henri Lansbury doing the damage. Winter signing Scott Hogan then left the field on a stretcher to compound the misery.

After an initial boost under the management of Steve Bruce the Villans are again in a rut.

They have lost their last five games in the Championship and have not won a game since Boxing Day and those glimmering hopes of a miraculous run to the play-offs have now been firmly extinguished.

Instead Villa are looking behind them, as they are currently just six points ahead of Wigan Athletic in the final relegation spot.

It was a performance that yet again left former Villa midfielder Ian Taylor disappointed. The former Villa captain again bemoaned the poor defending from Aston Villa, especially at set-pieces:

Aston Villa are struggling to keep teams at bay currently and must improve defensively if they are to steer clear of the relegation zone in the Championship.

But if they concede the sort of goals like they did against Newcastle throughout the rest of the season, relegation will become a serious concern.
