The defender was on the brink of a call-up in 2015.
Ipswich Town’s Grant Ward in action against Aston Villa’s Jordan Amavi (R)
Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi has commented on his chances of playing for the French national team in the months and years to come.
When Villa signed the defender last summer from Ligue 1 side Nice he was on the cusp of Les Bleus selection – after a sensational season on the French Riviera.
Unfortunately, his season last term was heavily disrupted. He suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament at the start of the season and Villa went on to get relegated.
Aston Villa’s Jordan Amavi
Amavi, despite being linked with a summer exit, stuck with Villa and is now starting to get back to his full fitness in the Aston Villa first-team.
But he is now some way off of the French national team, even after the retirement of Patrice Evra.
Speaking to Le10 Sport this week he had this to say about his French national team hopes:
“What are they older than me? Champions League (players)?
“They started earlier than me, are older, more experienced. They are in big clubs. This is not nothing, I cannot lie.”
Lucas Digne, Laurent Koscielny and Hugo Lloris line up before the game
The 22-year-old certainly has some big competition. Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain left-backs Lucas Digne and Layvin Kurzawa respectively are both ahead of him in the pecking order. The likes of Gael Clichy, Benoit Tremoulinas and Djibril Sidibe would also have something to say about it.
Amavi will hope to get back to his best at Aston Villa as soon as possible – and perhaps push for that elusive call-up.
