Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand is likely to be interviewed for the Aston Villa job, but is considered to be an outsider at this stage.

That’s according to Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett, who made the claims live on air earlier today.

“The Denmark boss Kasper Hjulmand is also on their list,” said Dorsett. “He’s very well-known by the sporting director here, Johan Lange, who himself is Danish.”

“Expect him to be interviewed, but I suspect he’s a bit of an outsider for the role as I see things at the moment,” he added.

Roberto Martinez and Steven Gerrard appear to be priority targets for Villa, at least ahead of Hjulmand as things stand.

The Sun reported over the weekend that Hjulmand was a target for Villa, and that appears to be true.

Just how much Villa actually want him remains to be seen.

Hjulmand is indeed close to Lange, having coached together at Lyngby back in their native Denmark.

The 49-year-old impressed as Nordsjaelland boss, earning himself a move to the Bundesliga with Mainz in 2014.

Yet after just five wins in 24 games, Hjulmand left in February 2015. He returned to Nordsjaelland, where his work helped him become Denmark boss in 2020.

This past summer, Hjulmand coached Denmark at Euro 2020, guiding them to the semi-finals despite Christian Eriksen’s cardiac arrest.

Hjulmand lack of top-level experience means he may not be Villa’s first choice, but Lange is a huge fan and that could carry some real weight.
